Adobe PhoneGap Build Service

Hi Everyone,

One of the options available to build mobile Hybrid mobile applications, which includes Neptune mobile applications, has been to use the Adobe PhoneGap Build service.

While not formally announced it appears that Adobe have halted new subscriptions to this service. As a consequence customers without an existing Build subscription will need to do their application builds using the Cordova command line option. This is essentially is what the PhoneGap does as a commercial service. Whether this halt to allowing new customer changes, for new or existing customers, at a later date we can't speculate on.

For customers using iOS devices, the Cordova command line requires the use of a Mac device and XCode. Android can be built using Android studio on Windows, Linux or Mac.

You can check out the Adobe support site for new posts on this topic here:  https://community.adobe.com/t5/phonegap-build/bd-p/phonegap-build

Zag, and many of our customers, have found the PhoneGap Build service excellent to use over recent years. Its use is not limited to BlueWorx/ Neptune and has a wide international customers base. The loss of this option in the context of BlueWorx is regrettable but beyond our control.

Hi Everyone,

Further to the previous post made some time ago Adobe have now formally announced that it will no longer be supporting PhoneGap build service - see: Update for Customers Using PhoneGap and PhoneGap BuildThe good news is that PhoneGap was always just an alternative to using Cordova Command Line (Cordova CL) as the article says.

The Cordova Apache Organisation have also commented on the news Goodbye PhoneGap with the reassuring comments "How is Cordova affected? In short: not much.".

We have customers using both PhoneGap and Cordova CL to build their BlueWorx/ Neptune apps. We recognise that this change is a good time for us to breakout our instructions on the Cordova CL build and spend some time explaining how to go about installing the supporting software. We've included this in the new online section: BlueWorx Mobile Application Build which we will be adding content to over the next few weeks.

Hi Everyone,

Neptune Software recently made some updates on this topic here: https://community.neptune-software.com/blogs/phone-gap-eol-moving-forward-with-mobile-app-devel

As highlighted in the previous post on this topic we are already upping the level of documentation and guides on the Cordava CLI option - see:https://blueworx.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/19000103774

In terms of Neptune's announced Mobile Build Service, when it comes out we will evaluate against standard BlueWorx and let you know our findings.

We have previously looked at the option of PWA for BlueWorx that Neptunes article mentions and will continue to do so. The early indications are that it will not work for the use-case and technology we use - for example location services. For further examples on what Apple API's reportedly will not support seehttps://www.digitalinformationworld.com/2020/06/apple-will-not-support-these-16-web-apis-that-allow-developers-to-create-powerful-web-applications.html
